As the New Year dawns, it’s a common practice to reflect on our lives and set goals for improvement. However, a common pitfall is aiming too high without a realistic plan to achieve these goals. While dreaming big is admirable, implementing smaller steps is crucial for a sustainable lifestyle transition. Remember, habits take time – around 8 to 12 weeks!

How to Create Sustainable New Year’s Goals

Start by reflecting on what changes you’d like in your life. Consider what makes you feel your best and move in that direction.

Check to Make Sure Your Goal is Realistic

Weight loss is a common New Year’s goal. If, for instance, you plan to lose 50 pounds by year-end, consult your doctor for approval. Healthy weight loss is typically ½ to 2 pounds a week.

Break Down Your Goal

Losing 50 pounds may seem overwhelming. Break it into smaller, more manageable goals like 4-5 pounds a month or about 1 pound a week.

Identify Roadblocks

Think of small aspects in your lifestyle that could hinder your goal. If weight loss is your aim, consider daily eating habits or soda consumption. Identify one or two roadblocks to start addressing.

Create Measurable Steps

Once you’ve broken down your goals, establish measurable actions. For example, plan to walk for 45 minutes 3 times a week for the next 8 weeks. Alternatively, gradually reduce your daily soda intake.

The key lies in making small lifestyle changes that you can stick with over time – because small changes accumulate significant results!
